BOTH TEAMS POSE FOR A PHOTOGRAPH AFTER THE GAME STORY: A former captain of the Afghanistan Women's football team said the newly formed Afghan Women United squad are "making history" as they compete in the FIFA Unites tournament in Morocco. Khalida Popal, a footballer turned rights activist, thanked FIFA for creating the tournament and sanctioning the establishment of the Afghan team that ends a four-year absence from international competition. The president of the sport's global governing body Gianni Infantino met the players on Wednesday (October 29) before their match with Tunisia in the FIFA Unites: Women's series tournament. He was presented with a shirt by the squad and told them they are writing a "beautiful story" in a competition that is the focus of FIFA's strategy to protect the rights of women to play football. The Taliban's prohibition on women's sports following their takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, prompted players to flee the country fearing persecution. Popal said the current squad are "the voice of Afghanistan, the voice of women from Afghanistan, but also they are inspiring people, not only women, around the world [with] how they are using their platform". The team is made up of 14 players based in Australia, five who live in the United Kingdom, two each from Portugal and Italy, and is coached by former Scotland international Pauline Hamill. They were defeated 4-0 by Tunisia in their second match of the competition after losing 6-1 to Chad in their opening game. Afghanistan's final game comes against Libya where they'll be the favourites going into the match. Libya have lost both their games against Tunisia and Chad both by a score of 16-0.
