The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are said to be set to appoint Abhishek Nayar as their new head coach for the next season of the IPL, a report by a source stated.
Former Mumbai all-rounder Nayar has been made aware of the decision by the franchise, with an official release to follow in the near future.
Nayar was earlier the assistant coach of KKR for Gautam Gambhir's IPL 2024-winning year and trained players in the franchise academy, Nayar's elevation appears a natural move.
After a poor IPL 2025 season with KKR registering just five wins from 14 games and missing the playoffs, the franchise has released head coach Chandrakant Pandit.
Promoting Nayar to the chief position indicates KKR's eagerness to resurrect under a coach well familiar with the team's environment and players.
Nayar returned to KKR after resigning from being assistant coach of Team India, bolstering the franchise's support staff. He also became head coach of UP Warriorz in the Women's Premier League (WPL) earlier this year.
Whether Abhishek Nayar will be doubling up as head coach for both leagues is only time will tell, but his analytical mindset and ability to work on player development make him a reliable name in Indian cricket.
Nayar played a key role in revolutionizing the performances of stars such as Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. He coached Rohit through a physical transformation, where he lost approximately 11 kilograms, and helped Rahul in improving his technique and consistency.
Nayar's experience in fitness and performance training is likely to heavily benefit KKR's team.
Apart from being a coach, Nayar has also worked as a cricket commentator for JioHotstar, providing expert analysis during India's tour of Australia.
Abhishek Nayar profound knowledge of player fitness, game plans, and technique has also made him a legendary coach poised to lead KKR to victory.
