The ozone layer is a very thin layer of gas above the Earth's stratosphere. It shields us from the Sun's dangerous ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Without it, there would be serious issues for life on Earth, such as increased skin cancer rates, eye illness, and harm to crops and aquatic life.

Late in the 20th century, scientists learned that the ozone layer was thinning, particularly above Antarctica. The primary cause was man-made chemicals known as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). They were used in refrigerators, air conditioners, spray cans, and a host of other industrial products.
