On October 20, 2025, a significant outage in Amazon Web Services (AWS) resulted in chaos to several online services with disruption across platforms such as Venmo, Snapchat and even airlines. AWS is an important cloud service provider that runs numerous internet-based applications and interruption to its systems caused serious problems for millions of users. Venmo, the widely used mobile payment application under PayPal, was among the most severely impacted, leaving a lot of angry users unable to access their funds or send money.

Venmo Users Report Outages Across the Board

More than 5,700 reports of Venmo problems following the outage attributed to AWS have been made, mostly based upon connectivity and app issues. Reports collected by Downdetector suggest that 52% of general app users faced app issues, while 42% faced issues logging in.

The Venmo Support account on social media advised users who were affected to contact their customer service for further assistance. This disruption comes at a very crucial time in that many rely on Venmo for daily transaction increasing the urgency for those having problems sending or receiving money.

Possible Cause of AWS Outage

The cause of Venmo’s outage seems to point to the AWS worldwide downtime which began earlier that day. AWS’s infrastructure supports many internet-based services and interruption to its systems sends shockwaves across the digital ecosystem.

Although Amazon cleared the primary DNS issue and claims most services were back up, the damages had already been inflicted. Venmo was among other portals that were continuing to see major issues as AWS was clearing its backlog of requests. Amazon confirmed that some of the services were still suffering from intermittent disruptions and asking users to keep expecting some issues until full recovery.

When Venmo Will Be Back?

The latest updates show Venmo continues to be down for thousands of users. Experts opine that while the worst of the outage seems over, it may well take another day to restore complete functionality for the Venmo app and other services affected.

According to Graeme Bragg, a computer networking specialist at the University of Southampton, although the DNS issue has stabilized, the backlog of requests on Amazon’s servers will still cause delays. The underlying lesson learned from this catastrophe is the fragility of the digital ecosystem and the power one cloud service provider exerts over global online industry.
