A major internet disruption hit users worldwide today as several popular websites and apps went offline. The issue stems from a technical problem at Cloudflare, a company that powers and protects many online platforms.

Cloudflare confirmed the issue on its status page. It said, “Cloudflare is aware of and investigating an issue that impacts multiple customers. Widespread 500 errors, Cloudflare Dashboard and API are also failing. We are working to understand the full impact and mitigate this problem. More updates to follow shortly.”

The company later added that it is “seeing services recover” but warned that users might still face “higher-than-normal error rates” as it continues to fix the issue.

What Went Down?

Thousands of users reported problems accessing X (formerly Twitter). Many saw a “something went wrong” message and a blank feed. ChatGPT, the AI chatbot by OpenAI, also went offline. OpenAI confirmed the outage on its website but hasn’t said if Cloudflare is the cause.

Other affected platforms include:

  • Perplexity AI
  • Gemini
  • Canva
  • Downdetector (the outage tracking site itself faced issues)

Users trying to access these services encountered “Internal Server Error” messages, which are linked to Cloudflare’s network.

What Does Cloudflare Do?

Cloudflare is a major internet infrastructure company. It helps websites load faster and protects them from cyberattacks. It acts as a middle layer between users and websites.
Because so many companies rely on Cloudflare, a problem in its system can cause multiple websites to crash—even if they are unrelated.

Not the First Time

This isn’t the first major internet outage in recent months. In October, both Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced outages. These incidents also caused widespread disruptions across many platforms.

In June, a Google Cloud issue affected services like Google Meet, Discord, and Spotify.

These repeated outages show how dependent the internet has become on a few key infrastructure providers. When one of them goes down, the ripple effect is massive.

What Happens Next?

Cloudflare says it is working to fully restore services. While some platforms are back online, users may still face issues for a while.

If you’re seeing error messages or blank screens, it’s likely due to this ongoing issue. You don’t need to change your settings or restart your device—just wait for the services to stabilize.
