India has officially launched e-passports, an advanced version of the traditional passport, aimed at enhancing security and streamlining international travel. This initiative was first introduced on April 1, 2024, as part of a pilot project by the Ministry of External Affairs. The government plans to gradually expand the availability of e-passports across the country in the coming months.

What Is an e-Passport?

An e-passport is a modernized passport that incorporates both physical and digital features. It contains an embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna, securely storing the holder's personal and biometric data, including fingerprints, a digital photograph, and an iris scan. The front cover of the e-passport is distinguishable by a small gold-colored emblem beneath the title. This design aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, ensuring global compatibility and enhanced security.

Key Features of the Indian e-Passport

  • Embedded RFID Chip and Antenna: Stores personal and biometric information securely.

  • Biometric Data: Includes fingerprints, facial image, and iris scan for identity verification.

  • Personal Information: Holds details such as name, date of birth, passport number, and more.

  • Contactless Technology: Allows for encrypted, contactless access, enhancing security.

  • Compliance with ICAO Standards: Ensures international recognition and compatibility.

  • Enhanced Anti-Fraud Measures: Minimizes the risk of counterfeiting or duplication.
