Dr. Avi Loeb, an astrophysicist of Harvard, gives a cryptic warning to “take vacations before October 29,” and all of this has attracted the interest of so many who have been left wondering what he means. The caution is actually on a rapidly approaching interstellar object called 31/ATLAS, which bears features so strange it challenges scientific convention and even stirs debate over whether scientifically speaking, it is more than just a space rock.
31/ATLAS: Unprecedented Size & Trajectory
31/ATLAS was discovered in July and it quickly brought itself to public attention by the simple fact that it is gigantic at 5.6 km across, it weighs more than 33 billion tonnes. At nearly 90 km/s, the object flies faster than other known interstellar bodies such as 1I/‘Oumuamua and 21/Borisov combined. Its path is aligned within five degrees of the solar system’s ecliptic plane an unusual precision for a naturally occurring object, according to astronomers.

Industrial Chemicals Raised Eyebrows
Its chemical fingerprint is even more confusing, however data from the Keck II telescope in Hawaii has revealed that the body releases nickel tetracarbonyl a byproduct of industrial activity on planet Earth. Producing around four grams of nickel every second, it does so without an associated iron signature an isotopic composition like none that has been observed in any other comet or asteroid.
Is this some form of technological artifact?
Dr Loeb, known for his unconventional explorations into hypotheses, holds that 31/ATLAS’s chemical composition and behavior are suggestive of intelligent design instead of forming a tail that points away from the Sun as most comets do this object actually appears to be jetting towards it. “If this were a machine or probe you wouldn’t expect it to behave like a standard comet,” he said and he added that he has serious concerns regarding NASA’s silence and opacity concerning related data.

Divided Opinions in the Scientific Community
While Loeb’s statements have stirred the public, a section of the scientific community remains in rift. A simulation modeling team from the University of A Coruna, Spain, is correcting models tracing 31/ATLAS through to the thin disk of the galaxy their argument leads to the conclusion of a natural source. They also draw from the identification of 93 potential stellar encounters for rejecting artificially derived propulsion claims.

The object will plunge towards the Sun on October 29, 2025, and will then be around 1.36 astronomical units distant. As scientists continue to track its trajectory and emissions, the true nature of 31/ATLAS remains a mystery. It could be something like a weird cosmic artifact or something much more profound either way, it is a discovery that inspires both wonder and wariness.
