Geminid Meteor Shower 2025: Viewing the Geminid meteor shower, which takes place in December every year, has long been among the most eagerly awaited events in the night sky. This year will be no exception, as it promises to be a spectacular sight. This event illuminates the night with bright yellow meteors that streak somewhere in the night sky.
For those in India, viewing this spectacle on the night of December 13, as it turns into December 14, will prove to be a relatively easy experience. A location that is free of obstructions in a dark area, along with a bit of waiting, will suffice. With advancements in technology in camera phones, even amateur photographers can take spectacular snaps of this spectacular sight.
The Geminids are thought to emanate from a location in the constellation of Gemini, near the twin bright stars Castor and Pollux. Unlike other annual meteor showers, which originate from cometary debris, these meteors are produced by asteroid 3200 Phaethon.
This rocky composition means that the meteors are colored bright yellow, as opposed to other annual meteor showers. Also, since they can be seen all over the sky, it’s not necessary to focus your gaze on a fixed point.
The event occurs every year between 13th and 15th December. The peak, in 2025, will occur in the late night of 13th December and in the early hours of 14th December. Clear and moonless skies are ideal for viewing meteors in their peak quantity.
Indian viewers are requested to come out between 1 AM and 3 AM on December 14. This would be when Gemini would be high in the sky, providing a good opportunity to witness plenty of bright-colored meteors.
In North America, that timing for the shower begins on December 13, going into December 14, with a peak in the early morning hours of December 14 around 2 a.m. Local time. A clear night means viewers in North America will be able to witness this meteor shower.
