Elon Musk has unveiled Grokipedia, an AI-generated encyclopedia created by his company xAI. The tech billionaire says it will challenge Wikipedia by offering more factual, bias-free content.
Announcing the launch on X, Musk posted, “Grokipedia.com version 0.1 is now live.” He further added, “Version 1.0 will be 10x better, but even at 0.1 it’s better than Wikipedia imo.”
The goal of Grok and https://t.co/op5s4ZikGJ is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
We will never be perfect, but we shall nonetheless strive towards that goal. https://t.co/j8bJf7c4Hl

What Is Grokipedia 0.1?
Grokipedia is designed to deliver, as Musk put it, “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.” The platform uses Grok, xAI’s in-house chatbot, to generate and fact-check all articles. Musk has repeatedly accused Wikipedia of editorial bias and said Grokipedia aims to provide a more transparent alternative.
According to Forbes, Grokipedia launched with around 885,000 articles, compared to Wikipedia’s massive 7 million. Unlike Wikipedia, which relies on human contributors, Grokipedia’s entries are entirely generated and reviewed by AI.
How Grokipedia Works?
Currently, Grokipedia does not allow users to make direct edits. Instead, Musk explained that users can “ask Grok to add/modify/delete articles and it will either take the action or tell you it won’t and why.”
This feature makes Grokipedia more controlled and AI-driven, unlike Wikipedia’s open editing system that lets anyone contribute or review changes.

Grokipedia vs Wikipedia: Key Differences
Content Creation:
Grokipedia’s articles are created and fact-checked by Grok, xAI’s AI model. Wikipedia’s content is written, updated, and reviewed by human volunteers worldwide.
Editing Access:
Grokipedia does not allow direct user edits yet. Users can only ask Grok to make changes. Wikipedia allows anyone to edit, discuss, and contribute in real-time.
Transparency:
Grokipedia lacks visible revision history and detailed edit tracking for now. Wikipedia offers full transparency, showing who edited what and when.
Scale and Reach:
Grokipedia launched with around 885,000 articles, still in its early v0.1 stage. Wikipedia hosts over 7 million articles across multiple languages.
Ownership and Operation:
Grokipedia is a for-profit project under Musk’s xAI. Wikipedia is a non-profit platform managed by the Wikimedia Foundation.
Philosophy:
Grokipedia focuses on AI-generated “truth” verified by its chatbot. Wikipedia emphasizes collaborative human knowledge and open community consensus.
Grokipedia Still Depends on Wikipedia Content?
Interestingly, some entries on Grokipedia carry a visible notice saying, “The content is adapted from Wikipedia, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License.”
These disclaimers reveal that parts of Grokipedia’s content are adapted or copied from Wikipedia. For example, topics like the Nobel Prize and Monday, as first reported by NBC News, contain these notices at the bottom of the page.
This sparked debate online, with one X user posting, “You know Grok uses Wiki pages?” To which Musk replied, “I know. We should have this fixed by the end of the year.” The inclusion of these disclaimers also highlights a paradox — Musk’s “Wikipedia rival” still depends on Wikipedia’s data in its early phase.
Wikipedia Responds
In response, the Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, issued a statement emphasizing the human touch behind its content.
It said, “Wikipedia’s knowledge is — and always will be — human. Through open collaboration and consensus, people from all backgrounds build a neutral, living record of human understanding — one that reflects our diversity and collective curiosity.”
The statement added, “Even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist.”
AI vs Human Knowledge
The launch of Grokipedia underscores the growing tension between AI-generated knowledge and human-edited platforms. While Musk envisions a future where AI curates and verifies truth, Wikipedia continues to champion human collaboration and transparency.
With Grokipedia still adapting content from Wikipedia and limiting user participation, the real question remains — can AI truly replace the human wisdom that built the world’s largest encyclopedia?
