Astronomers have expanded our horizons in the sky in August of the year 2025, researchers from Pan-STARRS observatory in Hawaii discovered a small asteroid, which has now been named 2025 PN7, traveling with Earth. The rocky voyager measures about 20 meters across and has probably been flying side by side with this planet for almost six decades following a course around the Sun nearly similar to that of the Earth.
What is a Quasi-Moon?
Instead of orbiting around Earth as does the usual Moon, a quasi-moon (or quasi-satellite) orbits around the Sun just like Earth orbit almost matches that of Earth’s, giving the false impression that it is orbiting the Earth. Observed from the Earth, it appears to be weaving or tracing a figure-eight pattern in the sky.
The inertial nature of both Earth and the Sun creates a combined pull on such an asteroid and giving it a synchronized but independent orbit.

What is the Orbit of 2025 PN7
The newly discovered quasi-moon tracks the yearly movement of the Earth around the Sun drifting slightly ahead or lagging behind. This delicate balance of gravitational forces keeps it close but never in danger of colliding with our world.
Temporary mini-moons that might just be with us for a couple of months to some few years, quasi-moons like 2025 PN7 could continue sticking around for many centuries before drifting off into the middle of nowhere.
Why Scientists Are Fascinated
These were sciences and this was not Earth’s first cosmic companion. Former quasi-moons like Kamo‘oalewa (2016 HO3) and 2023 FW13 have been part of cognitive curiosities for years now. It is in fact the stability and longevity of 2025 PN7 that marks this one apart.

Such things capture much research attention from scientists as they reveal the beautiful gravitational choreography between planets and the Sun. These bodies could be future targets for space missions, providing some light on the possible origins of the Solar System.
2025 PN7: A Reminder of a Dynamic Cosmos
The 2025 PN7 poses no danger miles away in its orbit from that of Earth but it makes the most serious point of all space is not static around us. There is the one true Moon of Earth through history and into eternity, but these smaller, temporary ones serve to remind us that the universe is in constant motion, full of unseen travelers silently sharing our solar journey.
