Cold Moon 2025: The last full moon of the year 2025 promises to be a showstopper for skywatchers all over the world. Dubbed the Cold Moon, this moon will look much larger and brighter than usual because of its proximity to Earth.

For astronomers and casual viewers alike, this supermoon provides one of the best opportunities to see one of nature's most striking spectacles before the turn of the year.

When & Where to Watch Cold Moon

The Cold Supermoon reaches full phase on the night of December 4–5, 2025. Though technically full for several nights, the peak display comes easiest to see just after sunset on December 5.

The Moon will rise over the eastern horizon, looking especially large and golden due to the moon illusion that makes objects near the horizon appear bigger.

No binoculars and telescopes are needed by observers; all they need is clear skies and an unobstructed view to the east.

When will the Cold Moon rise?

The time of moonrise for the supermoon depends on the location, but in India, the skywatchers would want to look east about 20-30 minutes after sunset. Allowing a few minutes for eyes to adjust to the surrounding darkness would pay off immediately.

The peak illumination, according to Marca, will occur in North America at 6:14 PM ET. The best time to spot the supermoon will be just after the Moonrise, when the lunar satellite is at the horizon. Moonrise for New York occurs at 3:54 p.m. EST while Los Angeles sees it at 4:22 p.m. PST.

The Moon will be there for hours, allowing quite sufficient time to observe this spectacle and take some breathtaking pictures with basic cameras or smartphones.

What is the Science Behind a Supermoon?

A supermoon is defined as a full moon happening when perigee-orbiting Earth at an average distance of approximately 357,218 km or 221,965 miles-is at its closest. For December 2025, this distance will be approximately 357,218 km or about 10-14% closer than average.

This proximity makes the Moon as much as 30% brighter than the smallest full moon of the year. The Cold Moon's occurrence near the winter solstice allows it to climb higher in the sky and remain visible longer.

Will it be visible in India?

Yes, the supermoon will be visible across India, depending on the weather conditions. The visibility would be ideal in rural areas, but city dwellers can witness this very bright lunar spectacle even after the light pollution. They can use available astronomy apps to determine exact moonrise timings to have better views.
