For skywatchers in Mumbai and this promises to be one of the most fulfilling chances in recent times to see a total lunar eclipse without needing telescopes or any other special equipment.

Why the Moon Turns Crimson

The name Blood Moon sounds mystical, but science has a very credible explanation for it. As the Moon transits through the Earth's umbral shadow, sunlight stops directly illuminating it. It shines as a dramatic red, for while the shorter blue wavelengths are scattered away by the atmosphere of the Earth and the longer red wavelengths are bent and sent towards the Moon.

This vectoring process casts an orange red hue across the lunar surface and transforming the eclipse into one of nature's most stunning sights.
