Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone is once again making headlines. The device, expected to be called the Apple iPhone Fold, has been in development for several years. Now, new leaks hint at an industry-first 24MP under-display camera, making it one of the most anticipated Apple products ever.
While Apple hasn’t confirmed any official details, industry analysts expect the iPhone Fold to launch in late 2026. However, some sources believe the release could be pushed to 2027 as Apple continues to refine the hinge mechanism and improve overall durability.
In terms of pricing, leaks suggest the Apple iPhone Fold could cost around USD 1,999 (approximately Rs 1,77,000). This pricing would put it directly against premium foldables from Samsung, OnePlus, and Google.
According to an equity research note from JP Morgan, the Apple iPhone Fold will feature a 24MP under-display front camera — a first for any smartphone. This will allow Apple to deliver a seamless full-screen experience without compromising on selfie quality.
A MacRumors report revealed that Apple has made significant progress in improving light transmittance and image quality for under-display sensors. So far, Android foldable phones like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series have struggled with this technology, often producing soft and hazy selfies due to display interference.
Apple’s approach seems different. The iPhone Fold is expected to use a 24MP sensor with six plastic lens elements, much more advanced than the 4MP or 8MP sensors used by rivals. This means users can expect clearer, sharper, and more natural selfies, even with the camera hidden under the screen.
Apple’s foldable phone may skip some features like LiDAR and optical image stabilisation (OIS), but it will reportedly come with a quad-camera setup. The configuration could include two 48MP rear lenses, a punch-hole camera on the outer display, and the 24MP under-display camera on the inner screen.
This setup could make the iPhone Fold one of Apple’s most versatile camera phones yet, offering a blend of innovation and performance.
Reports suggest that Apple is prioritising durability and design for the iPhone Fold. The company is said to be testing multiple hinge designs to ensure the device can withstand long-term use. Unlike typical iPhones, the foldable version might feature a side-mounted Touch ID sensor instead of Face ID for biometric security.
This move could be aimed at providing easier access when the phone is folded or in tablet mode.
Apple appears to be taking its time to perfect foldable technology before launching its version. While Android manufacturers have been experimenting for years, Apple’s focus seems to be on quality, camera innovation, and seamless design rather than rushing to market.
