6 Health Issues You Should Never Consult AI For | All You Need to Know

Doctors caution against using AI for chest pain, stroke, or severe infections. You can learn when to consult a doctor instead of using artificial intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used to check symptoms, get diet tips, and even seek mental health treatment. Physicians warn that for serious medical disorders, AI cannot replace skilled medical treatment. AI by itself has the potential to spread misleading information, delay treatment, or make potentially fatal mistakes.

Experts in medicine stress that diseases, including respiratory issues, serious infections, strokes, and chest pain, need to be treated promptly by trained medical professionals.

Why Doctors Warn Against AI for Medical Help?

AI cannot perform physical examinations, run diagnostic tests, or access a patient’s full medical history. Relying only on AI may cause stress, panic, or misdiagnosis.

Dr Manjusha Agarwal, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Gleneagles Hospital, explains:

  • AI cannot do physical check-ups.
  • It cannot run lab tests.
  • It lacks access to your personal health records.
  • It may cause panic, stress, or wrong self-diagnosis.

6 Health Issues You Should Not Consult AI For

1. Chest Pain

If you have chest pain or suspect a heart attack, go straight to the hospital. Dr Agarwal says, “A doctor is the only one who can determine whether it’s a serious issue, prescribe the proper treatment, and provide you with quick interventions if needed.”

2. Stroke Symptoms

Warning signs like arm weakness, slurred speech, vision loss, or a droopy face require urgent hospital care. Every second counts in stroke treatment. AI cannot match a doctor’s speed in diagnosis or timely action.

3. Severe Abdominal Pain

Unbearable stomach pain could be a sign of appendicitis, gallstones, or internal bleeding. According to the journal Pain and Therapy, AI may only offer generic advice. Only doctors can run imaging or lab tests to find the exact cause.

4. High Fever With Confusion or Seizures

Such symptoms may point to meningitis or other serious infections. As Frontiers in Digital Health highlights, AI cannot evaluate complex symptoms. A doctor can run immediate tests and provide treatment.

5. Unexplained Weight Loss or Constant Fatigue

These may indicate hidden illnesses like diabetes, thyroid problems, or cancer. Dr Agarwal says, “While AI might offer some diet tips or fatigue remedies, it cannot analyse your medical history or lifestyle or provide you with a comprehensive diagnosis.”

6. Breathing Problems

Breathing difficulty could mean asthma, bronchitis, or even a lung infection. The Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association warns that AI advice may delay critical care. Breathing issues can worsen quickly, so medical help is necessary.

When Can You Use AI for Health?

Doctors say AI can be useful for:

  • General lifestyle tips like a healthy diet and fitness routines
  • Explaining lab reports in simple terms
  • Symptom checking for non-emergencies
  • Always follow up with a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

AI as a Partner, Not a Doctor

AI can assist patients with managing lifestyle changes, comprehending material, and preparing questions for physicians, but the doctors continue to be essential for complex medical problems and emergency scenarios. Using AI as a guide to your disease, along with specialists, makes the final choice the safest approach.
