Delhi CM Rekha Gupta faced an alleged attack at her Civil Lines residence during a Jan Sunvai on Wednesday. According to initial reports, a man rushed towards her, used abusive language, and allegedly slapped her.

However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said the incident was exaggerated. Police arrested a 41-year-old man, Rajesh, from Rajkot in Gujarat, for the attack.

Kejriwal Condemns the Incident

Former CM Arvind Kejriwal strongly condemned the incident. In a post on X, he said that differences of opinion are normal in a democracy, but violence should never be allowed.

He expressed faith that the Delhi Police will take the right steps. He also wished that Rekha Gupta remained safe and healthy. Kejriwal’s words highlight a bigger worry—political fights are slowly turning into physical confrontations.

Conflicting Reports Add to Confusion

Early reports said Rekha Gupta was slapped. But BJP Delhi unit president Virendraa Sachdeva denied this. He said the CM may have hit her head on the corner of a table during the chaos when the man tried to pull her hand.

He dismissed the “slap” claims as false and added that doctors had checked Gupta and found her stable. These conflicting accounts added to more confusion about what happened.

BJP’s Reaction and Police Investigation

The BJP condemned the incident but also warned against spreading false claims. Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said he had heard that Gupta’s hair was pulled.

He also claimed that the accused appeared to have criminal intent and political leanings. He confirmed that the attacker had been detained and that police were investigating the matter.

Security Concerns for Leaders

This incident raises important questions about the safety of leaders at public meetings. Events like Jan Sunvai are meant to provide citizens a chance to discuss their problems with leaders.

However, this intrusion reveals security flaws, which show how easily such gatherings can turn deadly. Though political debates around the incident will continue, even if Rajesh’s arrest provides some clarification.

Why This Matters for Democracy?

The attack on Rekha Gupta has started a debate on politics and public behaviour. While leaders like Arvind Kejriwal call for calm, party workers are blaming each other. The outcome will depend on the police investigation.

But the incident already shows how intolerance is growing in political life. In a democracy, opposition and debate are healthy. However, leaders across all parties must make sure that violence does not enter public life.
