The political storm over alleged "vote theft" in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is intensifying. Opposition parties are now considering an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain told ANI that the party is ready to use every democratic tool available. “If there is a need, we will use all the weapons of democracy under the rules. We have not had any discussions (about impeachment) as of now, but if needed, we can do anything," Hussain said.

This statement came after continuous clashes between the Opposition and the Election Commission over alleged voter list manipulation.

CEC Rejects Allegations, Calls Them “Insult”

On Sunday, CEC Gyanesh Kumar strongly dismissed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s charges of large-scale vote theft. He said the allegations were baseless and amounted to an “insult" to the Constitution of India.

The CEC asked Rahul Gandhi to submit a signed affidavit to prove his allegations or to apologise to the nation. He also cited provisions of the Constitution and electoral laws to defend the Commission’s work.

Rahul Gandhi Hits Back

Rahul Gandhi responded sharply to the Election Commission’s demand.

“The Election Commission asks for an affidavit from me. But when Anurag Thakur says the same thing that I am saying, the poll body does not ask for an affidavit from him," Gandhi said.

The Congress leader claimed that his data on vote theft came directly from the Election Commission’s website. He made it clear that he would not file an affidavit.

Gandhi’s Allegations of “Vote Theft”

Last week, Gandhi alleged that over one lakh votes were “stolen” in Karnataka’s Mahadevapura assembly segment during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

According to him, there were 11,965 duplicate voters, 40,009 fake or invalid addresses, 10,452 bulk or single-address voters, 4,132 invalid photos, and 33,692 misuses of Form 6 for new voters.

He argued that these irregularities point to a “systemic manipulation” across India and not just in one constituency.

Opposition Pushes for “Clean Voter List”

Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders are demanding a “clean and pure” voter list. They argue that the alleged irregularities undermine the democratic right to vote. Gandhi said the issue will “explode soon” as it affects the entire country.

With Parliament’s Monsoon Session approaching, the row is expected to dominate proceedings. If the Opposition proceeds with an impeachment motion, it could trigger a historic political battle over electoral integrity in India.
