Papaya Leaf Juice: A Natural Remedy for Increasing Platelets in Dengue Patients

Dengue fever, transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, is a serious illness affecting millions globally. It can lead to severe symptoms, including a significant drop in platelet count, essential for blood clotting and stopping bleeding. Normal platelet counts range from 150,000 to 450,000 per microliter of blood, but dengue can reduce this number to as low as 20,000 to 40,000.

Integrative lifestyle expert Luke Coutinho has shared a natural remedy for stabilizing platelet counts: papaya leaf juice. Coutinho detailed the process on Instagram, advising patients to use fresh papaya leaves, remove the stems, wash, chop, and extract the juice. Despite its bitterness, papaya leaf juice is considered effective for boosting platelets. For those unable to access fresh leaves, supplements available at local pharmacies are a viable alternative, though it’s crucial to follow a doctor’s dosage recommendations.

Coutinho emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention if dengue symptoms such as fever, shivering, weakness, loss of appetite, skin bruising, or persistent itching occur.

In addition to papaya leaf juice, several methods can help increase platelet counts, including:

  • Nutritious Diet: Consuming foods rich in iron, vitamin C, vitamin K, and B12, such as leafy vegetables, lentils, pumpkin seeds, and dairy products, supports platelet production.
  • Hydration: Maintaining fluid balance is crucial. Drinking water, coconut water, and clear broths can aid in hydration and electrolyte balance.
  • Yoga and Exercise: Gentle exercises or yoga, such as Supta Badhakonasana, can help regain strength and overall well-being.

These strategies, alongside medical treatment, can aid in managing dengue and improving platelet levels.
