New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday formally announced the election process for its national president. The party issued a notification stating that nominations will be filed on January 19, with the results to be declared on January 20.
It is almost certain that acting president Nitin Nabin will be the sole nominee and will be elected unopposed. His proposers are expected to include Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister JP Nadda, and several Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states.
According to party sources, a meeting of the National Council has been convened immediately after the election, during which Nitin Nabin’s name will be formally approved. The party has called all its Chief Ministers, state presidents and National Council members to Delhi. National Election Officer Dr K. Laxman has released the complete election schedule.
With this, the BJP will get a new national president on January 20, after a delay of three years. The incumbent president, JP Nadda, will hand over charge after completing an extended tenure. Nadda assumed office on January 20, 2020. His three-year term ended in January 2023 but was extended due to various reasons, allowing him to continue for another three years without an election.
During his tenure, the BJP recorded significant electoral successes in several states, though it fell short of a majority on its own in the 2024 general elections. Toward the end of his term, the party secured a decisive victory in the Maharashtra civic elections, including the Mumbai Municipal Corporation.
After taking charge as acting president, Nitin Nabin signalled an active approach through extensive state tours, focusing on strengthening coordination between the government and the organisation and deepening ties with the RSS. Following his election on January 20, Prime Minister Modi will address party members, after which two days of meetings are scheduled.
Nitin Nabin is expected to move swiftly, holding meetings with Chief Ministers, state presidents and party leaders from across the country. The upcoming elections in Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry will be his first major challenge, followed by a tougher electoral cycle leading up to the 2029 general elections.
