MAHARASHTRA AND DELHI WITNESS DIPS IN DAILY COVID CASES

According to Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary, Health Ministry, 13 states, including Delhi and Maharashtra, are showing early signs of decrease in daily new Covid-19 cases, but these are very early signals and it is crucial to have continued containment efforts.

The Centre said, on Monday, daily Covid-19 cases in Delhi and Maharashtra are plateauing but these are “very early signals” and containment efforts have to continue to break the chain of transmission.

Addressing a media briefing, Joint Secretary in the Health Ministry, Lav Agarwal said 13 states, including Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, are showing early signs of plateauing or decrease in daily new Covid-19 cases. He said that states such as Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and West Bengal are still showing an increase in daily infections.

Delhi, which had recorded 25,294 cases on 24 April, registered 24,253 cases on 2 May. Similarly, Maharashtra had reported 65,442 infections on 24 April and 62,417 on 30 April.

Agarwal said 12 districts of Maharashtra are also showing signs of a decline during the period. “However, these are very early signals. It is important to have continued efforts of containment at district and state level so that we can preserve these gains and reduce cases further,” he said.

Maharashtra reported 48,621 fresh Covid-19 cases and 567 deaths on Monday. It was a dip in daily cases compared to Sunday when the state had reported 56,647 cases. Delhi reported 15,937 fresh Covid-19 cases and 1,076 deaths on Monday. It was a dip in daily cases compared to Sunday when the state had reported 20,394 cases. Owing to the lockdown in Maharashtra and Delhi, the daily number of Covid-19 cases has decreased significantly.

Mumbai recorded 3,672 fresh cases and 79 deaths on Sunday. Despite fewer tests, more people tested positive, taking the day’s positivity rate to about 13%. Moreover, on Friday, Mumbai’s positivity rate dipped below 10% for the first time in the past one-and-a-half month.

India registered a slight dip in Covid-19 cases as it registered 3,68,147 new coronavirus infections and 3,417 related deaths in the last 24 hours, said the Union Health Ministry on Monday morning. With this, the cumulative count of the cases has gone up to 1,99,25,604.

The daily spike had reached its peak of over four lakh cases on May 1 but came down to 392,488 cases yesterday. The cumulative death toll has mounted to 2,18,959. Currently, there are 34,13,642 active cases of Covid-19 in the country, as per the government data. The country also witnessed as many as 3,00,732 recoveries in the said period, taking the cumulative recoveries to 16,29,3003.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), as many as 29,16,47,037 samples have been tested for Covid-19 up to 2 May. Of these 15,04,698 samples were tested on Sunday. The total doses of the Covid-19 vaccine administered stand at over 15,71,98,207, said the Health Ministry. India is currently dealing with a devastating second Covid-19 wave that has swept through the nation, crushing the country’s health infrastructure and overburdening frontline medical workers.
