The tradition of Chappan Bhog has its roots in a beautiful story. Young Krishna loved butter, milk, and other dairy delights and once, he lifted the Govardhan Hill to protect Vrindavan from torrential rains caused by Lord Indra’s wrath. Krishna held the hill for seven days and nights without eating. Before this event, Krishna ate eight meals a day. Over seven days, that adds up to 8 × 7 = 56 meals. To express gratitude, villagers prepared 56 different food items, creating the Chappan Bhog tradition.
