Arun Khetarpal died in action during the Battle of Basantar in the 1971 Indo-Pak War when his tank was hit a second time. His first tank was hit and caught fire, but he continued fighting after being severely wounded, destroying one more enemy tank before the final, fatal hit.

Arun Khetarpal’s regiment was the 17 Poona Horse of the Indian Army; he was commissioned into it on June 13, 1971. He fought with this regiment during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War and posthumously earned the Param Vir Chakra for his bravery during the Battle of Basantar.
