Their story recently captured social media attention when Sharmilaa, the woman in the video, shared a heartfelt Instagram Reel. It showed their serene farm life: children playing barefoot on green grass, hens wandering freely, and a peaceful home nestled in nature. The video was captioned, “POV: they said resigning from a high-paying job in Singapore was a mistake and I showed them this.”
A former design and project engineer with a Master's degree from Singapore, Sharmilaa described how she and her husband stepped off the corporate treadmill to build a lifestyle that gave more time to their family and less to the grind.
“Three years ago, we made a big decision—we left our high-paying jobs, moved back to India, and chose freedom over the hustle. Not a perfect plan… just a quiet decision to prioritize life over work,” the post read.
With no clear road map, the couple relied on a vision, one rooted in balance, not burnout. They settled near the hills, working remotely and raising their daughter in a natural, nurturing environment.
Sharmilaa began working as a virtual assistant, a flexible online role that gave her the freedom she had longed for. “I thought I’d earn ₹20K a month doing something flexible as a Virtual Assistant. That was the only goal,” she said.
But that modest beginning soon grew into a stable, thriving business, offering financial independence and the freedom to live life on their terms. She now also mentors others who want to explore similar remote work paths.
Their story resonated widely. Many Instagram users expressed their own wish to escape the metropolitan hustle and rediscover a more grounded way of life, and many Instagram users showered the post with admiration. The film generated discussions about redefining success, from praising the serene environment to stressing the advantages of kids growing up in nature.
What is remarkable is not just their bravery in leaving but also their dedication to living a life that is consistent with their ideals, where fulfillment, freedom, and family are prioritized.
Stories like this serve as a welcome reminder that success doesn't always reside in a paycheck, it can occasionally flourish in the tranquility of the hills, as urban professionals increasingly reevaluate the costs of continual effort.
