What is the Significance of Sharad Purnima?
Sharad Purnima is not another full moon it is a night that is said to represent prosperity, health and divine grace. It ushers in the onset of colder months and is related to the Moon God and Lord Vishnu. The Goddess Lakshmi is also worshipped by devotees praying for prosperity and peace among all the Purnima celebrations, Sharad, Kartik and Jyeshtha Purnimas are particularly revered. The full moon of this night is said to be imbued with all sixteen kalas or attributes imparting great spiritual energy to it.
Why do we Celebrate Sharad Purnima?
In mythology, this night is an occasion to honor Raas Leela performed by Lord Krishna with Radha and the Gopis on the banks of the river Yamuna and the occasion is called Raas Purnima in several places. It is believed that those who take a holy dip in the Yamuna or remain awake in devotion get their heart’s desires fulfilled with this night is dedicated to divine love, cosmic beauty and inner awakening.
What are the Traditional Celebrations Across India?
Sharad Purnima is celebrated with rituals, music, prayers under moonlight and offerings to moonlight. On this day, devotees perform the Satyanarayan Vrat, recite the katha and offer the moon arghya after sunset. The homes are attired with diyas and rangoli, prayers and offerings are made for Lord Krishna and Goddess Lakshmi.

A practice common across the states is the preparation of kheer which is sweet rice pudding that is then kept under the moonlight to soak overnight in celestial nectar and this kheer is then consumed the next morning as prasad for the purpose of healing and well-being.
How to Perform Sharad Purnima Rituals?
- The day should begin with a holy bath.
- Place the idols or images of Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi and Shri Yantra on a clean altar.
- Bathe the idols with Panchamrit and offer sweets, fruits and kheer.
- Light a diya with ghee and chant Chandra mantras, Vishnu Sahasranama and Shri Hari Stotra.
- At night sit under the moonlight and meditating or chanting.

- Stay awake and chant Laxmi mantras.
- Offer Kheer and flowers and diyas to the deities.
- Do not eat non vegetarian food or drink alcohol.
