Saphala Ekadashi, which falls in the Krishna Paksha of the Paush month, is on December 15. While observing the Ekadashi fast, many devotees unknowingly make certain mistakes that weaken the sanctity of the vrat. As a result, they fail to receive its complete spiritual rewards. Here, we are citing some common mistakes that people must avoid while fasting for the Ekadashi.

In Hindu tradition, Ekadashi vrat is regarded as one of the most sacred and rewarding fasts. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this fast is believed to help devotees cleanse their sins, fulfill their desires, and invite peace, prosperity, and happiness into their lives. In 2025, Saphala Ekadashi will be observed on December 15, and fasting on this day is said to be especially beneficial, as it is associated with success and material as well as spiritual growth.

However, the true benefits of the fast can be reduced if certain things are not ignored. By staying mindful and avoiding the following five mistakes, devotees can make their Ekadashi vrat more effective and spiritually fulfilling.

Avoid Impure (Tamasic) Food During Saphala Ekadashi Vrat

One of the most important rules of Ekadashi fasting is maintaining a sattvic and pure lifestyle. Consumption of tamasic foods such as onion, garlic, meat, eggs, alcohol, or any non-vegetarian items is strictly forbidden. Beans and grains are also prohibited on Ekadashi, and devotees are advised not to harm or kill any living being on this day.

Many people assume that avoiding grains alone is enough, but scriptures suggest otherwise. Even cooking tamasic food at home or being exposed to its smell can reduce the spiritual merit of the fast. Therefore, only fruits, milk, dry fruits, and sattvic preparations should be cooked and consumed at home on Ekadashi.

Avoid Eating Excessive Fruit During Saphala Ekadashi Vrat

Devotees usually observe either a nirjala fast or a fruit-based fast on Ekadashi. Some people believe that fruit can be eaten in unlimited amounts, but overeating, eating frequently, or consuming fruit until the stomach is full weakens the vrat. According to scriptures, self-restraint is the highest form of penance during fasting. Maintaining moderation significantly increases the spiritual benefits of Ekadashi. Ideally, devotees should consume light fruit meals once or twice a day.

Avoid Negative Speech During Saphala Ekadashi Vrat

Ekadashi also requires strict discipline over one’s speech. Speaking harshly, criticizing others, gossiping, lying, or using abusive words in anger breaks the sanctity of the fast. Many devotees observe the vrat physically but engage in negative speech throughout the day, which destroys the spiritual merit earned.

Scriptures advise that remaining silent or speaking as little as possible on Ekadashi is the best practice. Devotees should dedicate their time to prayers, chanting, bhajans, and mantra recitation in devotion to Lord Vishnu.

Avoid Sleeping During the Day During Saphala Ekadashi Vrat

Sleeping during the daytime on Ekadashi is strictly discouraged. Due to fasting, some people feel weak or tired and take naps, but scriptures describe daytime sleep as a symbol of laziness that reduces the fruits of the vrat.

Instead, Ekadashi should be spent in worship, spiritual activities, and devotion. If drowsiness sets in, devotees are advised to listen to bhajans, visit a temple, or recite the Vishnu Sahasranama to stay spiritually engaged.

Not Observing Celibacy During Saphala Ekadashi Vrat

Observing brahmacharya (celibacy) is an essential rule during the Ekadashi fast. Physical indulgence or even entertaining sensual thoughts weakens the vrat. Scriptures clearly state that celibacy must be maintained through mind, speech, and actions on Ekadashi. Devotees should focus their thoughts on the worship of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Observing brahmacharya is believed to multiply the spiritual rewards of the fast and bring purity and discipline into one’s life.

By avoiding these five common mistakes while observing the Saphala Ekadashi fast, devotees can ensure that their vrat remains complete, meaningful, and spiritually rewarding. Along with fasting, faith, discipline, and strict adherence to the prescribed rules play a vital role in attaining the full benefits of Ekadashi.
