Navratri is among the most prominent Indian festivals. Navratri is devoted to Goddess Durga and her nine avatars. Every day of Navratri is significant, and people pray to a different avatar of the Goddess on every day. Maa Katyayani, the goddess of war, is worshiped on the fifth day of Navratri. She represents strength, courage, and devotion.
In 2025, the fifth day of Navratri, which is dedicated to Maa Katyayani, will be observed on September 27, 2025. Devotees wake up early, take a bath, and get ready to perform the puja with full devotion.
Maa Katyayani is referred to as the sixth incarnation of Goddess Durga in a few traditions, whereas others regard her as the sixth manifestation of Shakti. She is regarded as a great goddess who protects her devotees from evil forces. Maa Katyayani is also believed to bestow blessings upon her followers with courage, happiness, and the strength to overcome adversity in life.
People pray to her for marital bliss and love success often. Young girls who desire a good husband perform special prayers to Maa Katyayani. People also pray to her to eliminate obstacles and achieve peace and prosperity in their homes.
The worship of Maa Katyayani is straightforward but strong. The devotees arrange a clean area in their temples or homes. A photograph or idol of Maa Katyayani is kept, and flowers, sweets, fruits, and incense sticks are placed as offerings. Devotional songs and mantras in the name of Maa Katyayani are sung to attain her blessings.
Some individuals also do Kumari Puja, i.e., worshipping a young girl as the embodiment of the Goddess. Fasting on this day is practiced by numerous devotees either for the entire day or till the night puja concludes.
Each day of Navratri is dedicated to a particular color. On the fifth day, the devotees are requested to put on yellow attire. Yellow symbolizes joy, optimism, and good energy. Putting on yellow is believed to welcome the Goddess's blessings and the day with good vibes and prosperity.
