The nine-night Shardiya Navratri festival, held in complete devotion throughout India, commenced on September 22 and will conclude with Vijayadashami (Dussehra) on October 2. Each day of Navratri is devoted to some incarnation of Goddess Durga. The day of the fourth goddess, Maa Kushmanda, is seen as an incarnation who aids creation energy and joy. 

Who is Maa Kushmanda?

Kushmanda derives her name from the three Sanskrit words as Ku (little), Ushma (warmth/energy) and Anda (cosmic egg) which means she has the power to create the universe with her divine smile. The Maa Kushmanda is depicted as riding a lioness and has eight arms in her iconography, holding items like kamandal, bow, arrow, lotus, rosary, chakra and others. 

She presides over the Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra) and being a potent force for emotional trauma, anxiety and turmoil. It is believed that praying to her on this day will bring about emotional healing and rejuvenation.

Shubh Muhurat & Colour of the Day 4

To draw more spiritual benefits, devotees perform all the puja in these auspicious muhurats and key timings as per Drik Panchang are:

  • Brahma Muhurat: 04:33 AM-05:21 AM
  • Abhijit Muhurat: 11:47 AM-12:35 PM
  • Vijaya Muhurat: 02:12 PM-03:00 PM

Day 4 yellow colour is recommended because of the hue of happiness, clarity, mindfulness and illumination. It is believed that one renders yellow divine grace and good vibrations. 

What are Rituals & Fasting Guidelines for Day 4?

In the morning take a bath and wear yellow clothes arrange puja samagri such as vermillion, sandalwood, rice, sacred thread, diya and garlands. The main offering will consist of Malpua and should also include paan, elaichi, supari and seasonal fruits.

The goddess can be invoked by chanting:

After performing the final aarti in the evening, break the fast with a sattvik meal.
