Shardiya Navratri is observed as one of the most glorious and auspicious Hindu festivals and is in honor of Goddess Durga. Navratri is celebrated every year and is the most important after Chaitra Navratri. The celebration will be from September 22, 2025, to October 1, 2025.

Navratri is the time when Goddess Durga descends on the Earth for 9 days. These days, followers of the goddess worship the nine avatars of Maa Durga, assigning a day to each with colors, rituals, prayers, and special foods.

Shardiya Navratri Day 1

Day 1 of Navratri is devoted to Goddess Shailputri. She is said to be the epitome of purity, dedication, and complete strength. On Pratipada (first day of Navratri), devotees worship this incarnation of Maa Durga, as it is considered to be the first one. Individuals observe Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana) to attract the blessings of the divine goddess. Houses are adorned, prayers are recited, and rituals and mantras are offered to Maa Shailputri.

Devotees place a kalash at the front doorstep and welcome Maa Durga to their homes.

Significance of Maa Shailputri

Maa Shailputri literally translates to “Daughter of the Mountain” and is considered to be the first manifestation of Goddess Durga. Here, she is shown riding a bull and carrying a lotus in her left hand and a trident in her right hand. The Shailputri avatar of Maa Durga symbolizes purity, determination, and strength. She is worshipped in this form to gain stability, peace, and energy to start the spiritual walks of life. Maa Shailputri is also related to the Muladhara Chakra, which represented a firm and stable base for life.

Navratri Day 1: Maa Shailputri Puja Vidhi

Ghatasthapana: Keep a holy pot (kalash) on the puja altar or temple. Fill it with water and decorate it with some mango leaves. You may also place a coconut on top.

Keep a lamp (diya) lit and burn some incense sticks to cleanse your home and the environment.

Since the color for Day 1 is white, provide some white flowers, milk, and white sweets to Maa Shailputri.

Recite mantras or Durga Saptashati to receive her blessings.

End the puja with aarti and share prasad among family members.

Navratri Day 1 Color: White

The color of the first day of Navratri is reported to be white. Since the color represents peace and purity, it is the ideal representation of Maa Shailputri. On this day, white attire is worn by the devotees, and white flowers as well as offerings of food are made to Maa Shailputri. It is deemed that adopting this color amplifies serenity and brings one’s energy into conformity with the divine grace of the Goddess.
