Janmashtami or the day Lord Krishna was born on Earth, will be celebrated on August 16, 2025 (Saturday). Every year, the festival is celebrated with love, happiness, and religious fervour. Shri Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu was born on the eighth day (Ashtami) of Krishna Paksh in Bhadrapada month.

Onthis day, devotees fast in honour of his birth and celebrate with traditional cultural programs. They offer ‘prasad’ or ‘bhog’, including makhan misri, makhan paag, panchamrit, and gopalkala to Shree Krishna.

Types of Fast

There are two types of fasting that ca be done on Janmashtami:

  • Nirjala Fast: In nirjala fast, devotees do not consume any food or water until midnight. The fast is completed at midnight with prayers and aarti.
  • Phalahar Fast: This fast allows the devotees to consume only fruits, milk, and water until midnight. Vegetables and grains are avoided until midnight.
