Karwa Chauth is a Hindu festival in which married women fast from sunrise to moonrise, praying for the health, long life, and happiness of their husbands. The festival’s name comes from “karwa,” meaning an earthen pot, and “Chauth,” which is the fourth day of the lunar month. The day includes rituals such as offering water to the moon using the pot and celebrating the love and bond between husband and wife.

Karwa Chauth 2025 Vrat Katha
Long ago, there was a wealthy merchant who had seven sons and one daughter. On Karwa Chauth, his daughters-in-law and his daughter observed the fast. After fasting the entire day, everyone eagerly waited for the moon to rise in the evening. The daughter had become very hungry and weak. Seeing her condition, her brothers felt pity for her. They didn’t want her to suffer any longer, so they devised a clever plan. They went outside the town and lit a fire on a high spot, making the light appear like the moon.
The brothers told their sister, “The moon has risen.” Trusting them without checking, the sister assumed the firelight was the moon and broke her fast. But the moment she did, her husband fell ill, and the family had to spend all their wealth on his treatment. Later, when the sister discovered the truth, she deeply regretted breaking her fast by being deceived. She prayed to Lord Ganesha with full devotion, asking forgiveness for her mistake. Her sincere prayers and worship gradually healed her husband, and happiness and peace returned to their home.
