Rituals and Observance
Women start the day with an early bath and dress in fine clothes. They create sand idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati for the puja. The rituals also include narrating the story of Hartalika Teej while married women observe a strict fast, often without water, to seek blessings for their husband’s long life. The fast reflects strength, faith, and devotion.
Significance and Legend
Hartalika Teej is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand. The word Hartalika comes from Harat (abduction) and Aalika (female friend).

According to legend, Goddess Parvati’s friend took her to the forest. She did this to stop Parvati’s father from marrying her to Lord Vishnu against her wish. In the forest, Parvati performed penance to win Lord Shiva and impressed by her devotion, Lord Shiva accepted her. Since then, women worship Shiva and Parvati on this day, praying for marital bliss, happiness, and prosperity.
