The day is observed with prayers, hymns and community service to reflect the Guru’s teachings on the importance of equality, truth, and compassion.
Why is Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrated?
The festival is a celebration of the life and message of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, which spoke of belief in one god, the equality of all people and un selfish service. The three principles that guided his teachings were the basis on which the faith of Sikhism would stand Naam Japna, Kirat Karni and Vand Chakna. Guru Nanak Jayanti History
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in Talwandi which is now called Nankana Sahib in the year 1469. Through spiritual reform, he disapproved of caste barriers, stressing unity, truth and humility. It was at the age of 30 years that, after receiving a divine revelation, he spread his message throughout India and beyond. His teachings were later compiled in the Guru Granth Sahib, Sikhism’s holy scripture.
