What is Govardhan Puja

Govardhan Puja or Annakut “mountain of food” is a sacred moment when Krishna lifted the mighty Govardhan Hill in order to protect the villagers and their cattle from the wrath of God. At this occasion, it makes the big offer of food mostly vegetarian form symbolic hillocks and say a prayer for protection, prosperity and harmony.

The festival celebrates the victory of devotion over pride by worshipping the hill instead of the storm god, devotees affirm the power of faith and humility. It emblematizes reverence to the earth, animals and sustenance itself and the ritual of being actually in a food offering and purchasing the fruits of nature inculcates the feeling in participants that all living beings with some life supporting elements belong to an interconnected web.

Govardhan Puja has its roots deep into the Puranic way of lore and it is where Krishna told the people of Vrindavan to worship nature instead of the pompous thunder god Indra. So Indra released the storms and made Krishna take the hill and shield the innocent. It grew gradually over the years-the event has found it proper place in the lunar calendar during Kartik’s bright fortnight, and it is marked on Pratipada the first lunar day of the Shukla Paksha which means that it has much cultural and spiritual significance.

Govardhan Puja Timing & Puja Muhurats 2025

Govardhan Puja falls on 22 October in 2025, as Pratipada Tithi begins on the evening of 21 October and continues all the next day. The auspicious morning muhurat stretches from roughly 06:26 AM to 08:42 AM, while evening time spans from 03:29 PM to 05:44 PM. Devotees intending to perform rituals in line with the lunar and tithi based timing should do them during these times.

Govardhan Puja Traditions & Rituals

Major traditions include preparation of an unparalleled and immense assortment of vegetarian dishes sometimes as many as 56 distinct items, offered to Krishna to be as symbolic as the mountain itself. The families create miniature representations of Govardhan Hill using cow-dung or clay and decorate them with flowers, cow figurines and greens.

Worship includes aartis, bhajans and prayers followed by the sharing of prasad within family, neighborhoods and the wider community and in certain places cows are adorned and children do parikrama around the symbolic hillock, reiterating the pastoral devotion of the festival.
