On October 2, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi who is better known as Mahatma Gandhi or Bapu was born. The year 2025 is going to be the 156th birth anniversary celebration of Mahatma Gandhi, who lived a life dedicated entirely to truth, non-violence and justice. India celebrates Gandhi Jayanti as a national holiday, and it is internationally recognized as the International Day of Non-Violence. 

History of Gandhi Jayanti 2025

Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, at Porbandar in Gujarat and he was one of the notable leaders behind India’s independence movement through protests and campaigns against British rule. Millions of inspired by truth and non-violence are also led by his philosophy of Satyagraha after his assassination in 1948 and the Indian government declared October 2 national holiday in honour of him. This day reminds every one of the non-stop works for freedom, justice and equality.

Why is Gandhi Jayanti celebrated?

It means a lot to the Indian and global peoples, for the occasion affords a chance to meditate on Bapu’s teachings, apply them to everyday life and uphold the ideals of peaceful resistance and justice. It is a reminder that change always comes with positive movements devoid of violence, which would always echo in the modern day beyond memorialization, it inspires action towards nation-building and social harmony.

How is Gandhi Jayanti Celebrated?

The day is celebrated with concerts, prayers and cultural events across India at Raj Ghat in New Delhi, the event is attended by the President, Prime Minister and other dignitaries to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial. The schools and colleges run cultural programs, featuring performance of Gandhi’s favourite bhajan, Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram with the Debates, essay competitions and film screenings educate the younger generation about Gandhi’s values and life lessons.

Mahatma Gandhi Movements

Mahatma Gandhi led movements like the non-cooperation movement in 1920-1922 which urged Indians to peacefully boycott British institutions and goods. The salt march in 1930 was the non-violent method of Gandhi for protesting against the salt laws imposed by the British it was a part of the civil disobedience movement. In 1942, Gandhi steered the Quit India Movement which called for an immediate end to British rule.

This was not the end of the line for Gandhi he was also a promoter of social reforms, ranging from movements against untouchability to empower women. All his campaigns were based on Satyagraha the non-violent resistance that aimed at showing that united action by the citizens can challenge injustice and foster national unity.

Maintaining the Legacy of Gandhi

Gandhi Jayanti is more than merely a day to remember; it also goes to observe education, civic duty and social innovation. Cleanliness drives, memorial lectures and workshops take place all over the country to further inculcate his vision of a harmonious and disciplined society. It is the International Day of Non-Violence as recognized by the United Nation which cementing socially the global footprint of Gandhi and inspiring millions around the world to walk in the path of peaceful deeds and ethical leadership.
