Chhath Puja is among the most revered festivals that are celebrated in Jharkhand, especially in Dhanbad, it is of particular cultural and spiritual significance.
It is a four-day festival dedicated to Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya. In 2025, Chhath Puja will again make the city of Dhanbad sacred, filling it with devotion, songs, and light as the believers execute the Usha Arghya at dawn.
Chhath Puja during 2025 will be observed from Saturday, October 25, to Tuesday, October 28, 2025. The four significant days are:
Nahay Khay: Saturday, October 25, 2025
Kharna: Sunday, October 26, 2025
Sandhya Arghya (Evening Offering): Monday, October 27, 2025
Usha Arghya (Morning Offering): Tuesday, October 28, 2025
The Usha Arghya at Dhanbad will occur on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at approximately 5:37 AM. The devotees start gathering at the ghats several hours before sunrise to make preparations for their offerings.
During the Shashthi Tithi, the Muhurat of Usha Arghya takes place from 6:08 AM on October 27 to 7:49 AM on October 28.
On October 28, 2025, the hours of 6:09 AM to 07:05 AM are ideal for the Usha Arghya offering.
Worshipers must conduct the ritual within this period for the holiest blessings of Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya.
At Dhanbad, Chhath Puja is conducted with strict discipline and devotion:
Day 1: Nahay Khay- Worshippers take a sacred bath and consume a simple meal.
Day 2: Kharna- is known to be a strict fast. Fasting is done by offering jaggery kheer and fruits as offerings, and afterwards begins a long fast without water.
Day 3: Sandhya Arghya- The central ritual where devotees offer prayers to the evening sun at the river, praying for health and prosperity.
Day 4: Usha Arghya- The final morning sees devotees going back to the ghats to perform Arghya to the rising sun, signalling the end of the four-day fast.
The numerous things taken into consideration during Chhath Puja are:
Preparation: The prasad ingredients, like Thekua, seasonal fruits, sugarcane, and clay diyas, are prepared in a different, clean room with utmost attention to cleanliness. These are arranged with caution in the bamboo Soops.
The Arghya: Individuals stand in the Ganga, facing the sun. They hold in their hands the Daura of gifts and offer a mixture of milk and water to the Sun God from a copper urn (Lota), chanting hymns and age-old folk songs.
Worship Stance: Standing in water (for hours at times), both during the freezing sunrise and sunset ceremonies, is a wondrous sight of ultimate penance and religious discipline.
Paran comes at the end of the Chhath Puja fast. Once the Usha Arghya has been done, devotees finally partake in the prasad. Paran signifies gratitude, satisfaction, and the blessings bestowed by the Sun God.
At Dhanbad, Chhath Puja Paran will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, right after sunrise and Usha Arghya rituals are over. The devotees will break their fast and share the prasad with relatives, friends, and neighbours.
