In most rural communities, the families persist with long-standing traditions after the child’s birth, e.g., applying mustard oil, kajal, or milk feeding for strengthening. Although based on convention, physicians caution that a few of these habits can actually cause harm to newborn babies.
Expert Advice for Parents
Physicians in the Mirzapur Medical College, Uttar Pradesh, have advised parents to take additional care during the initial six months of the baby’s life. They recommend avoiding kajal application, excessive bathing, excessive massaging, or feeding anything other than breast milk.
Dr Aastha Bhatt, Paediatrician and Assistant Professor, in a discussion with Local18 stated, “Applying kajal is highly advised against for infants less than 28 days old as it can lead to eye infections. The ingredients in kajal are highly toxic and can clog up the tear ducts, resulting in watery eyes.”

Precautions while Bathing and Massaging
Dr Bhatt also advised against regular bathing, particularly in winter, since repeated cold exposure can damage the baby. In place of mustard oil, she recommended coconut oil, as it is softer on the skin of baby. She also advised against strong massages, which could interfere with the natural growth of body organs.
Care for the Fontanelle
The most tender spot on a new baby is the fontanelle, or the soft spot of the head. Dr Bhatt stressed that the spot should never be pressed or rubbed, as it can kill brain development and even lead to lasting damage.
Breastfeeding Is Essential
Dr Bhatt noted that infants less than six months must be breastfed exclusively to meet their nutrient needs. They should not be given other types of milk or water as it can cause problems and restrict healthy growth.
