A Kolkata court on Friday denied permission to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a narco test on Sanjoy Roy, the prime accused in the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The CBI, which is leading the investigation, had requested the court to allow the use of narcoanalysis as part of their efforts to extract further information from the accused.
What is a Narco Test?
A narco test, also referred to as narcoanalysis, involves administering drugs like sodium pentothal (commonly known as “truth serum”) to induce a hypnotic or semi-conscious state in a subject. This method is often used to lower a person’s self-consciousness, making them more likely to speak freely and provide truthful answers to investigators. However, such tests are controversial and require court approval, which was denied in this case.
Sanjoy Roy’s Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
Sanjoy Roy, the key suspect in the case, was arrested on August 10, just a day after the semi-naked body of the young trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar hospital. The horrific incident has triggered nationwide protests, with the medical community and public demanding swift justice.

Roy is currently lodged in Presidency Jail in Kolkata. Last week, a Kolkata court rejected his bail plea and extended his judicial custody until September 20, 2024.
CBI Collects Key Forensic Evidence
As part of the ongoing investigation, the CBI collected crucial forensic evidence, including dental impressions and saliva samples of Sanjoy Roy. These will be compared with the bite marks found on the victim’s body to confirm Roy’s involvement in the crime. According to sources, forensic experts discovered multiple bite marks on the trainee doctor’s body after it was recovered.
The CBI is working closely with the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) to analyze the evidence and ensure that justice is served in this heinous crime.
