India ranks 86th in Covid-19 performance among 98 countries evaluated by Sydney-based think tank Lowy Institute.

India’s Covid-19 tally mounted to 10,702,730 with 11,666 new cases in last 24 hours, while 10,373,649 people have recuperated from the infection so far pushing the national recovery rate to nearly 97 percent. With 123 more fatalities, the death toll reached 1,53,895. The Covid-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.44 percent. There are 1,75,328 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country which comprise just above 1.6 percent of the total caseload.

Delhi registered a total of 199 new coronavirus cases taking the national capital’s tally to 6,34,524. The number of active cases is 1,575, of which 645 are in home isolation. The total number of cases that have been recovered are 6,22,114. The death toll rose to 10,835 after 6 more fatalities. Post logging less than 100 cases a day on Wednesday, the number of cases rose back to nearly 200 on Thursday. Delhi has seen and surmounted three waves of coronavirus infections, when India was still in first phase of the nationwide lockdown to control the pandemic.

Maharashtra on Thursday registered 2,889 fresh cases, taking the total tally to 20,18,413. The state now has 43,048 active cases. With 3,181 discharges, the total number of recoveries climbed to 19,23,187. The state’s death toll surged to 50,944 after 50 people lost their lives on Thursday. 

In India, Kerala has the highest number of active cases accounting for about 42 percent of the overall 1.7 lakh active caseload. It is followed by Maharashtra.

“The two states still have 40,000 or more active cases–Kerala with 72,000 cases and Maharashtra with 44,000 cases.Together, these states also account for 67 per cent of all (active) cases,” Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said.

The UK, which ranks better than India at 66, and the US, whose performance is among the worst five, rank poorly too, while China was not included in the study. Brazil ranks last.

India has gifted over 55 lakh doses of coronavirus vaccine to neighbouring countries so far, external affairs ministry said on Thursday. Addressing a weekly briefing, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Anurag Srivastava on Thursday said India plans to gift vaccines doses to Oman, CARICOM countries, Nicaragua, Pacific Island states.
