The Union Finance Ministry on Wednesday extended the deadline to file income tax return (ITR) for individuals by 10 days to 10 January 2021. The deadline for filing tax returns by businesses too has been extended till 15 February, the ministry said in a statement.

This is the third time that the government has extended the deadline to file ITR—first from the normal deadline of 31 July to 30 November 2020, and then to 31 December 2020.

Also, the due date for filing declaration under the direct tax dispute resolution scheme Vivad Se Vishwas has been extended by a month till 31 January.

Besides, the date for filing GST annual return for 2019-20 fiscal has been extended by two months till 28 February 2021.

The extension of the deadline till January 10 is for filing ITR for 2019-20 fiscal year (2020-21 assessment year) and is for those individuals whose accounts are not required to be audited and who usually file their income tax return using ITR-1 or ITR-4 forms, as applicable, the statement said.
