IMD Forecasts Light To Moderate Rain In Several Districts Of Odisha On December 24

The Odisha Meteorological Department on Sunday forecasted light to moderate rainfall in several districts of the state on December 24 and isolated places in coastal Odisha on December 25.

IMD Bhubaneswar Director Manorama Mohanty, speaking to ANI, noted that the minimum temperature in the last 24 hours was recorded at 11.5 degrees Celsius in the Koraput and Nayagarh districts.

“…The minimum temperature recorded in the districts of Koraput and Nayagarh is 11.5 degrees Celsius. If we see the forecast for the next five days, next 48 hours, mostly weather will be dry and after 48 hours on 24th December, light to moderate rain very likely at a few places in the district of Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri and others… On 25th December also light to moderate rain is very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of coastal Odisha…” Mohanty said.

On Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Ganjam, Gajapati, Kendrapada, and Jagatsinghpur districts, predicting light to heavy rainfall as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal intensifies.

IMD Bhubaneswar Director Manorama Mohanty added, “Wind direction has changed to south-easterly, and the winds are carrying a lot of moisture as a result of which there was a forecast of rain. In interior Odisha, light to medium rainfall is expected. Heavy rain is expected in some places.”

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are expected in many parts of coastal Odisha and isolated areas of interior Odisha on December 24. Additionally, shallow to moderate fog may develop in one or two locations in Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Sundargarh districts.

As of 8:30 AM IST on December 20, 2024, the IMD reported that a well-marked low-pressure area over the west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal remained stationary. The associated upper cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level.

This system is expected to move northward and intensify into a depression within 12 hours. It will likely track northeastwards while maintaining its depression status over the following 24 hours.

Meanwhile, no significant temperature changes are expected over the next three days, though a drop of 2-4 degrees Celsius is anticipated thereafter in various districts of Odisha.

The IMD has also advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea along the North Andhra Pradesh and adjoining South Odisha coasts, as well as the west-central Bay of Bengal, due to predicted unfavourable conditions.
