Jyoti Sharma left behind a suicide note in which she accused two faculty members a male and a female of continuous harassment and humiliation.
A tragic incident shook the campus of Sharda University on Friday night after a second-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student, Jyoti Sharma, was found dead in her hostel room. The student allegedly died by suicide, leaving behind a note accusing two faculty members of mental harassment.
The incident has sparked a debate and anger among students and the academic community, leading to protests on campus and demanding strict action from the police.
According to police officials, Jyoti Sharma left behind a suicide note in which she accused two faculty members a male and a female of persistent harassment and humiliation. The note mentioned that she had been facing mental stress for a long time due to the behavior of the faculty members, particularly over issues related to academic performance and internal assessments.
In the note, she alleged that the constant mental torture and public humiliation drove her to the extreme step. Following the recovery of the note, Jyoti’s family filed a complaint with the local police station, accusing the two staff members for the reason of suicide.
The Greater Noida Police responded quickly by arresting both accused individuals. They confirmed that an investigation is in progress and emphasized that all the required legal steps are being taken in accordance with the law.
News of Jyoti’s death spread rapidly among the student community, leading to instant protests outside the hostel building. Students demanded justice for their fellow classmate and called for strict action against the faculty members named in the suicide note.
The police assured students and the family that the matter would be investigated thoroughly and impartially. Authorities also confirmed that Jyoti’s body was sent for post-mortem examination, and forensic teams have collected evidence from the scene.
Jyoti Sharma’s family, devastated by the loss, publicly called for justice. They claimed that Jyoti had been subjected to unfair treatment by the faculty and alleged that previous complaints were brushed aside by the administration.
The family has demanded action and justice not only against the faculty members but also against anyone in the administration found responsible for ignoring the student’s appeal.
In response to the incident Sharda University suspended the two faculty members named in the suicide note. The university also formed a high-level internal committee to investigate the matter independently.
The administration assured students and the family that anyone found guilty of misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary and legal action. Meanwhile, police have registered a formal case under relevant sections of the law, including abetment to suicide. Investigators are examining academic records, interviewing students and staff, and reviewing CCTV footage to build a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to the tragedy.
This tragedy has added to a growing list of student suicides linked to harassment, bullying, or academic pressure in India. Stakeholders are demanding concrete reforms, including:
Establishing licensed counseling centers in all universities and colleges.
Ensuring confidential complaint mechanisms with guaranteed follow-up action.
Introducing periodic audits of faculty behavior and student welfare practices.
Setting up independent student grievance committees with external oversight.
