Topping the list is the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore, which maintained its position for the third consecutive year. NLSIU's commitment to excellence has consistently earned it top ratings in teaching, research, and outreach activities.
"NLSIU has always aimed to set the bar high. We are delighted to have maintained our position. This recognition reinforces our commitment to providing a world-class legal education," said Prof. Sudhir Krishnaswamy, Vice-Chancellor of NLSIU.
Following NLSIU, the second spot was clinched by the National Law University, Delhi. The other three institutions that rounded off the top five are the NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur's Law School, and Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar.
The NIRF ranking employs a detailed methodology that includes factors such as Teaching, Learning, and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Perception (PR). Each institution is assigned a score out of 100 based on these parameters.
"Our methodology is designed to provide a comprehensive view of the overall performance of an institution. We take into account several criteria to ensure the ranking is well-rounded and truly reflective of an institution's capabilities," explained Dr. Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
The NIRF rankings have significant implications for prospective law students, as they can influence decisions about where to apply and enroll. Moreover, they provide institutions with valuable feedback on their performance and areas for improvement.
"These rankings play a vital role in shaping the future of our students. They not only help students make informed decisions but also push institutions to strive for excellence," stated Dr. R. Venkata Rao, former Vice-Chancellor, NLSIU.
The NIRF rankings showcase a competitive landscape in the Indian legal education sector. As institutions vie for the top spots, their efforts to enhance their teaching, research, and outreach activities inevitably result in higher quality education for students.
Prof. Krishnaswamy of NLSIU summed it up best: "The competition among institutions is fierce, but it is a healthy one. It pushes us all to do better, to innovate, and to ensure we are providing the best possible education for our students."
With the release of the NIRF 2025 rankings, the stage is set for another year of academic rivalry and excellence. The list serves as a reminder of the arduous work and dedication that these institutions put into shaping the future legal professionals of India.
