BRAOU is the first university to apply this method in India, allowing all transgender individuals in Telangana to undertake undergraduate degree courses free of cost in the academic year 2025-26. This is a very bold initiative taken by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University.

Eligibility-Fee Structure

Transgender candidates who qualify for admission into any undergraduate degree offered by BRAOU include those who have completed at least 10+2 (Intermediate) or an equivalent qualification. While full fee waivers are to be provided, there will be a very low registration fee of ₹500.

This fee is very minimal and will only allow the administrative cost to be taken care of without making it unreasonably expensive.

Beyond Fee: Study Materials and Accessibility

Prof. Ghanta Chakrapani, the Vice-Chancellor, said that the university would also provide free course materials and other study tools for transgender students.

The charges will be zero whether they attend classes physically at any of the study centers across Telangana or access content digitally. This is a comprehensive set of support systems to ensure accessibility of education and smooth learning.

Most Issues Related to Equal Opportunity in Citizens

BRAOU is not new to social responsibility. The university offered free education to serving prisoners and military personnel and more recently extended free higher education to children from marginalized tribal communities, who, among others, include the Gond, Koya and Chenchu. Transgenders would further bolster their status as leaders in equity education.

“This initiative is a landmark step to facilitating equal access to education for all sections of society,” said Prof. Chakrapani.

By allowing gender minorities to pursue undergraduate qualifications without any burden of fees, these striking developments set an example among institutions in the rest of the country. There is an emerging recognition that a right to education is an intrinsic fundamental right that should not be denied because of gender identity or social background.

How to Apply

Anyone wanting to take admission may go to any of the study centers in Telangana.

For more information, the university’s two help desks (040-23680333, 23680555) and official website (www.online.braou.ac.in) provide exhaustive information.
