EC appoints 10 electoral observers to oversee roll revision in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Satyaprakash Sahoo on Thursday held a meeting with the electoral roll observers, appointed by the Election Commission to oversee the voter list revision process in the districts allocated to them.

All the 10 IAS officers are given in charge of up to 4 districts to monitor. The EC released the draft electoral list on 16 November.

In the meeting, Tamil Nadu CEO Satyaprakash Sahoo instructed the observers about the work that needed to be carried out by them to prevent duplication and omission of the valid voters. Sahoo said that they would be organising special camps for the people to verify their details and photos before the final list is prepared. He also requested the voters to come forward and verify their details in the list.

As per the draft electoral list, the total electorate in Tamil Nadu is 6,10,44,358 and Special Camps will be conducted on 21-22 November and 12-13 December for the voters to include, delete, modify their details in the Electoral Rolls at the polling stations.

Tamil Nadu will go to polls in the next 6 months and the process for readying the electoral list has been stated by the EC.

Sources say that the final electoral list will be released in January and these appointments are made to speed up the process.

The electoral roll observers have been instructed to oversee the correction process in the electoral lists as the Opposition parties have already raised several questions over the draft electoral list.
