The Delhi Government is preparing to operationalise hydrogen fuel cell buses in the national capital in collaboration with the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), NTPC and other stakeholders, as part of its green mobility push.

The move aims to introduce next-generation hydrogen fuel cell technology into Delhi’s public transport system and strengthen the city’s shift towards low-emission, sustainable mobility.

According to officials, the initial deployment will be carried out in coordination with NTPC. The buses are proposed to operate under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model, with DTC facilitating operational deployment.

Under the proposed arrangement, DTC will bear operational expenditure at approved GCC rates, while additional costs beyond the GCC framework are expected to be supported through NTPC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) mechanism and other arrangements being worked out with the agencies concerned.

Officials said the Delhi Government, DTC, NTPC and other stakeholders are finalising the operational modalities and a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to begin hydrogen fuel cell bus operations in the city.

The initiative marks a key step in Delhi’s efforts to modernise public transport and adopt emerging clean fuel technologies. Hydrogen fuel cell buses produce zero tailpipe emissions and offer high operational efficiency, making them a promising option for reducing pollution in urban transport networks.

The Delhi Government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, has been focusing on sustainable urban mobility and clean energy solutions to tackle air pollution and improve the capital’s transport infrastructure.

Delhi Transport Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh said the city was moving towards future-ready public mobility systems.

“Delhi is steadily moving towards clean, future-ready public mobility solutions. Hydrogen fuel technology represents an important step in our journey towards sustainable and environmentally responsible transport systems. Through collaboration with organisations such as NTPC, we are exploring innovative pathways to introduce advanced zero-emission technologies that can strengthen Delhi’s public transport network while contributing to cleaner air and a greener future,” he said.

The proposed hydrogen bus rollout is expected to complement Delhi’s transition towards electric mobility and reinforce the government’s commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of public transport in the national capital.
