To honour the tricolour ahead of India’s 75th Independence Day, the Congress and a number of party officials updated their profile pictures on Wednesday. This occurs a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi requested the nation to use “Tiranga” as their social media profile image.

The BJP leaders followed the exhortation of the PM immediately. The Congress leaders too joined the movement the next day, with a twist, displaying the picture of the first Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru, holding the tricolour.

The official handle of Congress posted on the micro-blogging site captioned, “The tricolour is in our hearts, it is in our veins as blood. On December 31, 1929, Pandit Nehru, while hoisting the tricolour on the banks of the river Ravi, said, “Now the tricolour has been hoisted, it should not be bowed.”

It also read, “Let us all make this tricolour our identity, which gives the message of undivided unity of the country. Jai Hind “

Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with other senior leaders of Congress, also changed their display picture to Jawaharlal Nehru’s picture holding the National Flag.

The Congress leader, Jairam Ramesh, tweeted, seemingly criticising the Centre’s choice to permit the production and sale of the tricolour made of polyester, “And that too in Khadi.”

On Sunday, Prime Minister Modi stated that the 75th anniversary celebrations of Independence, known as “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav,” are becoming a widespread movement. He invited people to use the image “Tiranga” as their social media profile pictures between August 2 and August 15.

Taking to Twitter, PM wrote, “It is a special 2nd of August today! At a time when we are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, our nation is all set for Har Ghar Tiranga, a collective movement to celebrate our tricolour. I have changed the DP on my social media pages and urge you all to do the same. “
