The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday took Giribala Singh, the mother-in-law of deceased Noida resident Twisha Sharma, into custody after the Jabalpur High Court cancelled her anticipatory bail.
The development marks a key turn in the case, which involves allegations of dowry harassment and mental torture following Twisha’s unnatural death on May 12. The Supreme Court recently directed the CBI to take full control of the investigation to ensure a centralised and expeditious probe.
Giribala Singh faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including Section 80(2) for dowry death, Section 85 for cruelty to a woman by her husband or relatives, and Section 3(5) for acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention. She has also been booked under Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
Twisha Sharma, a resident of Noida, had married Bhopal resident Samarth Singh in December 2025. After her death, her family alleged that she had been subjected to sustained mental torture and harassment over dowry demands by her in-laws.
The Supreme Court has also asked both the victim’s family and the accused’s family to refrain from giving media interviews while the investigation is under way.
With the CBI now leading the probe and Giribala Singh in custody, investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding Twisha Sharma’s death. The investigation is continuing.
