Delhi: As Delhi witnesses a worrying spike in murders, targeted killings, gang-related crimes and recurring firing incidents, Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Legislative Assembly Ati- shi has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking an urgent meeting and cautioning that the deteriorating law and order situation has plunged the national capital into an at- mosphere of fear.

In her strongly worded communication, Atishi al- leged a “systemic failure” of policing in the city, marked by delays, inaction and an absence of accountabil- ity, despite the Delhi Police functioning directly under the Union Home Ministry. She argued that the worsening security situation has left citizens increasingly anxious, raising fundamental questions about who can be relied upon for protection if the country’s capital itself feels unsafe.

Expressing deep concern, Atishi wrote that a series of serious criminal incidents over the past few months have eroded public confi- dence and created a sense of insecurity, particularly among women, senior citi- zens and the trading community. Citing specific cases, the LoP referred to the daylight killing of AAP karyakarta Rachna Yadav near Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s residence in the BC Block area.

According to the let- ter, the assailants stopped Yadav, verified her identity and then shot her multiple times as she was returning home. Atishi described the incident as a targeted mur- der, pointing out that Yadav was a key eyewitness in her husband’s murder case and was due to depose in court on February 7, 2026, rais- ing serious concerns over witness safety in Delhi.

The letter also highlighted a major terror incident near the Red Fort, recalling the November 10, 2025 car bomb blast that claimed 13 lives and left several others injured. With the probe being handled by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Atishi noted that an attack near one of the nation’s most iconic landmarks reflects serious gaps in the security framework meant to safeguard citizens in the capital.

Questioning the credibility and internal discipline of the police force, Atishi cited a December 2025 incident in which a Delhi Police constable allegedly attempted to snatch a woman’s earrings before being apprehended by the public.

She said such episodes point to a disturb- ing trend of criminal con- duct by uniformed person- nel, potentially linked to stress, substance abuse or inadequate supervision. Drawing attention to the rise of organised crime, the LoP recalled a brazen gang- related murder outside a gym in the upscale Greater Kailash area in September 2025.

The killing, reported- ly claimed by the Lawrence Bishnoi and Rohit Godara gangs, underscored, she said, how organised crimi- nal networks now operate openly even in areas consid- ered among the city’s most secure.

Further underlining the surge in violence, Atishi referred to multiple firing incidents reported across Paschim Vihar, Green Park and East Delhi on the night of January 13–14, 2026.
