What should the speed limit under the Delhi Police Act? An amendment has been made in this regard. The speed limit on major roads and road stretches of Delhi was last revised in 2011. The maximum speed limit for some roads was revised in 2017 and 2019. Now, on 8 June 2021, a notification has been issued and the maximum speed limit has been fixed for different categories of vehicles on different roads in kilometres per hour (kmph).
The Delhi Traffic Police on Friday fixed speed limits for motor vehicles, noting that unregulated plying of such vehicles on the roads of the national capital are endangering the lives of the motoristsand other people who happen to be on the road. In a notification signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Delhi Traffic Police, the department informed citizens of the revised maximum speed limits for various types of vehicles on Delhi roads. The new speed limits will come into effect on an immediate basis, the Delhi Police informed.
“We’ve revised speed limit under four classifications. For M1 category vehicles, the max speed limit is 60-70 kmph. We’ve made cabs/taxis speed limit at par with cars after this notification,” said Meenu Choudhary, Joint CP Traffic.
“Where the speed limit for cars is at 50 kmph, the speed limit for two-wheelers will be at 50 kmph but where the cars speed limit is 70kmph, for two-wheelers it will be 60kmph,” added Joint CP Traffic.
Under the new rules, app-based cabs like Uber, Ola can operate their vehicles at a maximum speed of 50-70kmph on most roads as they fall under the M1 category vehicles. This category also includes others cars and jeeps. However, the speed limit should be restricted to 30kmph inside commercial markets, minor roads, and residential areas.
The Delhi Traffic Police has fixed the speed of all two-wheelers, motorbikes at a maximum speed of 50-60kmph at highways and flyovers but it has to be reduced to 30kmph whenever the two-wheeler is in a residential complex, service roads, and commercial markets.
For two-wheelers, the Delhi Traffic Police has fixed the maximum speed limit on most roads, highways, and flyovers at 50 to 60 kmph. For these types of vehicles, too, the speed limit remains fixed at 30kmph on all minor roads inside residential areas, commercial markets, and service roads.
Delhi Traffic Police has fixed the speed limit for all transport vehicles including Gramin Sewa, TSRs, Phat-Phat Sewa, and quadricycles. They should maintain a uniform speed of 40 kmph. In the M2 category vehicles, the speed has been restricted to 50-60 kmph on most roads and it includes all the delivery vans, motor cars etc.
For M2 and M3 category vehicles, the speed limit is fixed at 50-60 kmph.
If a rider or driver is found to violate the above-mentioned speed restrictions set by the Delhi Traffic Police to be more than 5% of the fixed maximum speed limit, the Delhi Traffic Police shall take cognizance of the offence under section 183 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. However, if the person found to drive the vehicle within 5% of the set rules, they can be excused according to the notification by the Delhi Traffic Police.
