Travel to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai is set to become more convenient with the development of new Metro projects. The 3.4-kilometer Mumbai Metro Line 7A, an extension of the operational Metro Line 7, is currently under construction, connecting Andheri East to the airport.
Additionally, the underground Metro Line 3, spanning from Colaba to Bandra-SEEPZ, will offer easy access for commuters heading to the airport. Both Metro lines will provide direct routes to the airport terminal area, eliminating the need for auto-rickshaws or taxis. Metro Line 7A is expected to be operational by December 2025, significantly reducing travel times to the airport.
Several other upcoming Metro lines, such as Line 1, Line 6, 2A, and 2B, will also feature interchange stations, further enhancing intra-city and suburban travel. Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is overseeing Metro Line 7A, while the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRC) is responsible for the underground Metro Line 3.
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Commissioner of MMRDA, emphasized that Metro Line 7A would play a crucial role in connecting the international airport to the MMR region, ensuring a hassle-free journey for commuters. ““This Metro line will serve as a reliable link, seamlessly connecting the western and eastern suburbs of Mumbai, along with South Mumbai, Mira Bhayander and Thane, through a comprehensive network of Metro lines, including 7, 2A, 2B, 9, as well as underground Line 3, Line 4, and Metro 10. The convenience of this connectivity will provide commuters traveling to the airport with a hassle-free journey, offering convenient access to the T2 terminal,” said Dr Mukherjee. A spokesperson for MMRC stated, “Metro Line 3 is expected to be the busiest single line in Mumbai, connecting multiple major hotspots from Colaba to SEEPZ. Airport stations of MML-3 are the most crucial stations of this corridor as it will connect T1 & T2.”
