In response to a concerning incident last month, the Northern Railways has taken decisive action, removing the station master of Kathua following the unauthorized movement of a driverless freight train. The train traveled approximately 70 kilometers to Punjab’s Ucchi Bassi at speeds ranging from 70 to 75 kmph, raising significant safety concerns.
The removal from service notice cited “negligence” as the primary reason, highlighting the potential for a major incident resulting in loss of lives. This action follows the earlier removal of the train’s loco-pilot on similar grounds.
Sources reveal that both the station master and the loco-pilot were served with notices on the day of the incident, February 25. The notices outline lapses in duty, with the loco-pilot failing to stabilize the train by applying brakes, and the station master neglecting essential safety protocols.
Railway sources emphasize the critical role of both the loco-pilot and the station master in ensuring operational safety. According to established norms, once the loco-pilot completes their duties, the station master is responsible for verifying safety measures, including securing the train’s wheels to prevent unintended movement. Both individuals have the opportunity to appeal against the punitive measures within 45 days of receiving the order.
An initial investigation into the incident revealed that the train, a divisional material train (DMT), lacked a guard’s coach. Attempts to direct the train to Jammu were unsuccessful due to safety concerns raised by the driver.
The report indicates that the train remained unmanned for a significant period before initiating its unexpected journey. Crucially, standard procedures regarding communication between the station master and the loco-pilot were not followed, contributing to the incident.
